Current economic conditions are proving to be challenging. The days of getting a job any place, at any time appear to have passed. With unemployment and under employment numbers over 10%, securing a full or part time job has become a test. Gaining employment in any capacity requires preparations in personal areas. In the past, these personal areas were not strongly considered.
Self assessment building
When individuals take a hard look at their positives and negatives, a clearer picture is gained. It is necessary to be painfully honest when self assessing. Lying to one’s self will not prepare an individual for confronting personal flaws and short comings. One way to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses is to make a list.
When listing the accomplishments, make note of the date each goal and success was accomplished. By adding dates, the individual may determine length of time between each success. This will show lateral winning steps to success. Concentrating on what was done correctly reinforces positive attributes. The list can take the form of a personal resume’.
If an individual would not hire themselves based on their resume’, why should an employer? Doing a personal assessment privately, allows the individual to isolate and attack problem areas. Studying problem areas should be done with the assistance of a very close and very trusted, and very honest counselor.
Working your personal interest
Anything a person can do for hours and find fulfilling should be considered when seeking employment. Whatever that thing is which totally captures and captivates a persons’ interest is an area that brings joy. To get lost in “what you are doing”, is a joy to the doer.
Job seekers should always consider their heartfelt hobbies as an area of employment. To have a job doing work that the worker loves to do is not a job. In this instance, the worker – employee is having fun all day. This is likely to result in happier and more satisfying work results.
Clear and Accurate Resume’
A resume’ is a snap shot of a persons’ working life. It relays facts and details concerning the accomplishments and successes of a potential employee. Make sure this document is accurate and truthful. Finding appropriate synonyms may slightly exaggerate job positions and duties, that is okay.
Never say, “I am the former CEO of Widget INC.”, when you worked the mail room. The exception is if your name is Widget and your business is a solo proprietorship. Then, you may be correct. Employers and their Human Resource Managers get really upset at being lied to. This could make a new career very short.
Attitude: Willing to Adjust
Having a bad attitude can sink a person faster than swimming with pockets full of rocks. When searching for employment, presenting a negative attitude can be disastrous. Employers are providers and managers of people, products and services. Hiring a new employee with a bad attitude could be detrimental to the entire office, shop, or business. Very few employers are willing to risk such results, if they have a choice.
Voluntarily attitude adjustments, before starting a job hunt increases the chances of getting hired. Such an adjustment will reflect in interviews, as well as with friends and family members. With the proper attitude, leads on job openings are more likely to be offered. It would be good to remember, no one wants to work with a master of negativity.
Winning with persistence
In a tight economy, jobs are harder to find. For this reason it is wise to be prepared to work at finding work. Employers have many more potential workers to choose from. They do not have to take the first person walking through the door. They have the liberty of being picky about who they hire.
If unemployed, job hunting should be an hourly and daily activity. Unless an employer wants a particular individual, by name, they will seldom come to anyone’s door and offer them a job. Based on that fact, daily searching is essential.
Millions have lost their jobs, but new people are always starting new businesses. Workers are needed in all positions to keep a company going. If people are not actively seeking employment, finding the next worker becomes another problem. Individuals presenting themselves as possible assets to companies are more likely to become a member of the team.
